From the fall of 2012 to 2017 I was pen pals with a girl from Sydney, Australia. Whenever she would visit Los Angeles we got together for movies, dinners, and frequent hikes up the Hollywood Trail. Our chemistry was palpable but she lived over seven thousand miles across the seas. It didn’t seem possible for us to grow beyond a friendship living so far apart. Finally, after one of her extended visits, we decided to make the jump, and in early spring of 2018, we got engaged. Soon after, she packed her bags and moved to the U.S. ready to begin the next chapter of her life. In the blink of an eye, our relationship imploded and a couple of months later, she flew back to Australia pregnant. Our precarious future as a family induced fear and tumult which lead to anger, confusion, and more fights, as a result, the distance between us grew. In ‘WUBAS’ I tell the story of the transient romance that ended in tears and broken hearts. And how I transmuted the suffering of animosity, dissonance and anger into compassion, equanimity and love. Written in the spirit of flowering, WUBAS(Win Under Beautifully Adverse Situations) is an intimate enlightening memoir dedicated to my daughter, Aaliyah aka Chubba Wubas.
